About Double Blind

Double Blind is hosted by Sacha Peter.

I graduated with a B.Sc from UBC, majoring in physics. I worked for five years as a systems engineer for a large company specializing in air traffic control and air defence systems. They eventually moved operations to the USA, so I started to diversify my marketable skills into several niches. One educational diversification is that I am a Certified Management Accountant, with my interests more in the financial side than the accounting side.

I own a small business, Divestor, which is my vehicle for consulting in the financial, accounting, and political domains. This ranges from interpreting the Income Tax Act to campaign management and analysis.

I actively maintain a financial portfolio. Probably the best highlight is that I have remained quite solvent during two of the worst market crashes in history (2000-2002 and 2008) by simply getting out of the way in time. I try to keep my investments as boring as possible, but still deliver market-beating returns.

At heart, I enjoy analyzing systems and like to speculate on outcomes of what happens when you change things. Since the world is a very complex place, trying to predict the outcomes of what would initially seem to be benign changes is not as easy as one may think.

Also, I am an elected park commissioner in Cultus Lake Park, elected by the people of Chilliwack and am honoured to be trusted by so many for the position. This job provides a lot of challenge, and it is one that I am very happy to shoulder for the Park’s stakeholders.

Suffice to say, I have diverse interests and plan to keep it that way.

Useless trivia about Sacha:

I’ve shaved my head bald twice in my life, both times for Cops for Cancer. If you’re curious to see a picture, one is here. More frequently you will see me in a desperate need for a haircut.

Myers-Briggs: You can best classify me as an INTJ.

The best hour of television ever made (in my opinion) was the X-Files episode of Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose.

I have an aggressive sweet tooth and am eternally grateful I don’t suffer from diabetes. I can make dark chocolate fondue from scratch and don’t make it too often since I’d use it as a sauce for everything in the most inappropriate of circumstances.

I love looking at all sorts of maps and enjoy exploring arbitrary locations.

As for diverse interests, in no particular order, a few of them are:

  • Predicting the laws of unintended consequences.
  • Minority game theory.
  • Government, Legislation and Elections.
  • Travelling large distances by automobile with no agenda and a simple road map.
  • Conversation with people in small groups (or one on one) in quiet places.
  • Finance, stock markets, information markets and taxation issues.
  • Astronomy.
  • Political Borders.
  • Public transportation, urban planning and demographics.
  • Education and the distribution of knowledge.
  • Classic games.
  • Peafowl.
  • Psychology and the study of social interactions.
  • Camping, hiking, topographical maps, GPS and the occasional swim.
  • Food – both cooking and consumption. Regrettably, I haven’t found a way around doing the dishes.
