Will Star Trek be a good movie?
Posted in Commentary on March 11th, 2009 by Sacha PeterOne of my end-of-2008 predictions was that the new Star Trek movie will be bad. Looking at the new preview, it’s looking interesting.
I had similar thoughts as to Star Trek: Nemesis (the last movie) which had a good looking preview but turned out to be mediocre. So the jury is still out!
The director is a good indicator of whether or not it will be good.
Event driven marketing relies on hype to push initial sales, and utilizes a herd-like psychological mechanism in humans which gets them to run out to something (like a movie) instead of sitting back and waiting for reviews from people you trust and with whom you are relevantly simpatico.
I initially thought the slogan for the movie was “Go Back”, then I realized that it was just the button to go back to the main web page. :P
This is Star Trek we are talking about, so the rules of rationality don’t apply here.
Re An’s comment, I second that, but add to look at the screenwriters:

Also, Abrams’:

Having said that, I think it’s a little silly to try to figure out beforehand – it’s probably just contributing to the marketing schema.
